Common Sense Orchid Growing TipsWhile each variety will have it's own specific requirements, look at these as good rules of "green" thumb!Water but don't water too much. Orchid roots need to breath you know. This is one of the most important orchid growing tips on the list. They should be the right amount of light, not too much or too little. And rarely direct sunlight. The temperature should be pleasant. |
Obviously the light and temperature requirements depend on the type of orchid you're growing.
For instance a simple and common orchid to grow inside is the Phalaenopsis commonly called the moth orchid. This orchid needs the regular home temperature and a fair amount of light.Feed every week but make sure the fertilizing is light. Orchids are light eaters.
The Paphiopedilum or Lady Slipper requires little light.
While Oncidium or Dancing Dolls, Vandas, and Dendrobiums require lots of light.
Ideal humidity should be between forty and seventy percent.
Unless the orchids are terrestrial, don't put them in soil. Epiphyte orchids can be mounted on orchid bark, lava rock or placed on chunks of bark.
In fact Dendrobiums, Cattleyas, and Oncidiums do best when clinging to tree bark, pressed tree fern, or cork bark with sphagnum moss surrounding the roots. Just don't forget. Orchids with roots exposed to the air need more watering than potted orchids. Misting would be one of the better orchid growing tips for them.
While many stores use plastic orchid flower pots to save money, orchids will do fine in clay orchid pots as long as the humidity is high.
Another orchid growing tip? Find a potting mix that works and stick to it. Don't be constantly switching from one mix to another.
Now if you use pots, make sure the pots are clean.
