Orchid Growing Tips - Lighting
When it comes to indoor orchids, caring for them properly requires decent lighting. It's one of the often misunderstood facts about orchid plants
|
You see proper lighting is critical for getting these beauties to bloom again. If you want to achieve that, proper lighting is not one of these orchid growing tips you can cheerfully ignore.
Now which orchids species you're dealing with determines how much light your plant needs..
For instance cattleya orchids need the most light. You want to set these plants in a south window filtered by a sheer curtain. Alternately you can achieve the same affect without the curtain simply by setting them back a few feet from the window.

Oh and cattleya orchids leaves should be yellowish. If they're dark green and leggy - get them more light.
In general it's safe to say tropical orchids don't like bright sun light. (Remember where they grow in the wild.) Often the best exposure is sitting in an east window.
Now if you lack a window with decent light, you can grow most orchids under four 40-watt fluorescent tubes. Turned on for 16 hours a day.
Growing orchids under hid lighting can also work.
Tip: For best results with florescents make sure the tops of your orchids are about six inches away from the bulbs.
Put horizontal growers in the middle of your plant tray. That's where the light is most intense. Tuck upright growers on the ends. Where the light intensity is lower.
