Bamboo Orchid Growing Tips

The bamboo orchid is a terrestrial ground orchid.


Native to Burma and the Pacific Islands, the bamboo orchid is also common to Nepal, Thailand, Malaysia, South China, and Indonesia. In Hawaii, this orchid is found on the rich slopes in the volcanic mountain areas.

Interesting this fast growing orchid sprouts like a small stand of bamboo. Resulting in long narrow stalks 4-6 feet in length with leaves four to six inches long.

Although it can get 8-10 feet in height.

Delicate looking it can be surprisingly resilient.

Bamboo Orchid Care Instructions

Flowering from summer to fall, the bamboo orchid does well in a moderate to warm climate. So it is best grown outdoors. This orchid is simple to grow, but it needs quick draining soil and moisture. Go easy on the fertilizer while being generous with the water (watering like every 3 days).

It likes full sun but tolerates partial shade. If you keep it warm and sunny you may find it can almost be an ever bloomer although it typically blooms spring and fall.

You'll find each spray of buds sets about 5 flowers The cream-colored flowers are smallish, about 1-1 1/2 inches with lavender throats. The beautiful orchid blossoms last 4-5 weeks.
